Who’s On Your Birth Team? Building a Circle of Support You Can Trust

Doula using a rebozo technique to support a laboring woman during birth

The other night, as I was cleaning up dinner and listening to the chaos of five kids running around (and maybe a pup or two barking), I thought about how motherhood isn't something we’re meant to do alone. And neither is birth.

When I think back to my own birth experiences, the difference between feeling overwhelmed vs. supported almost always came down to one thing: my people.

Your birth team is more than a checkbox on your plan—it’s your front line of support, your encouragement squad, and the ones who remind you: you’ve got this.

1. What Is a Birth Team?

Your birth team includes anyone who supports you physically, emotionally, and spiritually during labor. This might include:

Your partner or spouse

Midwife or OB

Doula

A close friend, sister, or faith mentor

A birth photographer or videographer

Childbirth educator or lactation consultant

The right team aligns with your vision, not theirs.

2. Choosing People Who Respect Your Values

Whether you're planning a homebirth or hospital delivery, the people around you should honor your preferences, boundaries, and faith. Look for team members who:

Listen without judgment

Are experienced and compassionate

Respect your desire for a peaceful, low-intervention birth

Support prayer, worship music, or faith practices during labor

3. Don’t Overlook the Role of a Doula

A doula is a game-changer. We walk with you through each wave, helping you feel grounded, comforted, and heard. We're the extra hands to rub your back, the calm voice when the room gets loud, and the one who reminds you of the why when you're feeling weary.

4. Peace Is the Priority

Ultimately, birth is sacred. And your team should reflect that. You deserve to feel peace, not pressure. If you’re not sure who to include, pray over it. Trust that God will lead you to the right people.
